Wildlife & Habitat Restoration
Protecting Somalia's unique biodiversity through comprehensive conservation strategies and community engagement.
Our Wildlife & Habitat Restoration program is at the forefront of protecting Somalia's unique biodiversity. We conduct comprehensive surveys and genetic analyses to map the distribution of critically endangered species like the Somali Wild Ass and various antelope species, identifying their remaining strongholds and migration corridors.
Through cutting-edge scientific research and grassroots community involvement, we work to restore degraded habitats and establish wildlife corridors that allow species to migrate safely between protected areas. Our team collaborates with local communities to develop sustainable livelihood alternatives that reduce pressure on wildlife habitats while providing economic opportunities. We also implement advanced monitoring systems using camera traps, GPS collaring, and satellite tracking to gather crucial data on wildlife populations and their behavioral patterns.
Key Activities:
- Comprehensive wildlife surveys and genetic analysis
- Habitat restoration and protected area establishment
- Community ranger training and deployment
- Zero-poaching campaigns and enforcement

Bird Conservation & Flyway Monitoring
Safeguarding Somalia's avian treasures along major migratory routes through scientific monitoring and community engagement.
The Bird Conservation & Flyway Monitoring program safeguards Somalia's avian treasures, recognizing its strategic position along major migratory routes. We meticulously identify and advocate for the protection of Important Bird Areas (IBAs), including coastal wetlands, riverine forests, and arid grasslands.
Our comprehensive bird monitoring network spans across Somalia's diverse ecosystems, from the coastal mangroves to the highland forests. We conduct regular bird counts, migration tracking, and breeding surveys to understand population trends and habitat requirements. Working closely with international bird conservation organizations, we contribute valuable data to global flyway conservation efforts. Our community-based monitoring programs train local birdwatchers and guides who become champions for avian conservation in their regions.
Key Activities:
- Important Bird Areas (IBAs) identification and protection
- Seasonal migratory bird surveys and habitat use mapping
- Community bird monitoring programs
- Citizen science initiatives

Marine & Coastal Ecosystem Protection
Preserving the health and productivity of Somalia's vast coastline through mangrove restoration and sustainable fishing practices.
Our Marine & Coastal Ecosystem Protection program is dedicated to preserving the health and productivity of Somalia's vast coastline. We lead initiatives for the establishment and expansion of mangrove reserve forests, undertaking large-scale planting efforts in degraded coastal areas.
Somalia's 3,025-kilometer coastline is one of Africa's longest and most biodiverse. Our marine conservation efforts focus on protecting critical coastal habitats that serve as nurseries for fish species and breeding grounds for marine life. We work with fishing communities to establish no-take zones and implement sustainable fishing practices that ensure long-term productivity. Our coral reef restoration projects use innovative techniques to rebuild damaged reef systems, while our marine debris cleanup campaigns mobilize communities to protect ocean health.
Key Activities:
- Mangrove forest establishment and expansion
- Coastal dune rehabilitation projects
- Community-managed fishing zones
- Coral reef conservation strategies

Wetland & River Basin Restoration
Revitalizing the critical Shabelle and Jubba river ecosystems that serve as lifelines for both human and natural communities.
The Wetland & River Basin Restoration program focuses on revitalizing the critical Shabelle and Jubba river ecosystems, which are lifelines for both human and natural communities. Our activities include extensive riverbank planting with native species to prevent erosion, improve water quality, and restore riparian habitats.
Somalia's river systems are the backbone of the country's biodiversity, supporting unique wetland ecosystems that provide critical habitat for countless species. Our restoration efforts involve sophisticated hydrological assessments, soil stabilization projects, and the reintroduction of native plant species that naturally filter water and prevent erosion. We collaborate with upstream and downstream communities to ensure holistic watershed management, addressing pollution sources and implementing water conservation measures that benefit both ecosystems and human settlements.
Key Activities:
- Riverbank restoration with native species
- Floodplain protection and management
- Community pollution prevention campaigns
- Wetland sanctuary establishment
Our Target
Our strategic focus areas for the next three years, designed to create lasting impact across Somalia's diverse ecosystems and communities.
