About Us

From the collapse of government to the forefront of conservation — discover how Nature Somalia emerged as a beacon of hope for the country's wildlife and ecosystems.

Who We Are

Nature Somalia is a non-governmental, community-led conservation organization working to safeguard Somalias birds, wildlife, wetlands, and coastal ecosystems.

Since the collapse of the central government in 1991, Somalia’s natural ecosystems have been under severe and sustained threat due to prolonged conflict, political instability, and the breakdown of national governance structures. Somalia is inherently rich in biodiversity—its wetlands, grasslands, and coastal zones have historically supported a wide range of migratory and resident bird species, mammals, and marine life. However, these ecosystems are now under pressure from habitat destruction, poaching, and unregulated exploitation of natural resources. As a result, many species have become endangered, vanished entirely, or been forced to migrate to neighboring regions.

Nature Somalia was founded by a group of environmental conservation experts, the organization aims to fill a critical gap in national conservation leadership and operates at the nexus of biodiversity conservation, community resilience, and sustainable development.
