Land Restoration and Greening Project

Joint Initiative by Naturesomalia and Jazeera University

A comprehensive environmental restoration project addressing climate change and ecological degradation across Somalia through community-driven green solutions.

Naturesomalia, in partnership with Jazeera University, has successfully launched a comprehensive Land Restoration and Greening Project aimed at addressing environmental degradation and climate change across Somalia.

This transformative initiative spans several regions, including Galkacyo in Galmudug State, and extends to the capital city, Mogadishu, through a dedicated “Urban Plantation” program. The project represents a milestone in Somalia's environmental conservation efforts, focusing on restoring degraded lands, planting fruit trees in residential neighborhoods, and enhancing green cover to improve both ecological balance and community well-being.

By increasing vegetation coverage across diverse landscapes, the initiative seeks to capture atmospheric carbon, create vital wildlife habitats, and improve air quality—directly contributing to climate resilience and environmental sustainability. The project emphasizes community participation and scientific approaches to ensure long-term environmental impact.

Key Strategic Approaches

Afforestation & Reforestation

Establishing new forests and rehabilitating deforested areas to significantly increase carbon sequestration and restore ecological integrity.

Agroforestry Systems

Integrating tree planting into farmlands to enhance biodiversity, improve soil fertility, and strengthen agricultural resilience to climate variability.

Wetland Rehabilitation

Restoring degraded wetlands to enhance carbon storage, improve water filtration, and support diverse ecosystems.

Urban Greening Initiatives

Expanding vegetation and green spaces in urban centers to reduce heat island effects, purify air, and enhance urban biodiversity.

Community Participation

Actively involving local residents in tree planting and land restoration activities to ensure project sustainability and promote environmental stewardship.

Education & Public Awareness

Providing training, workshops, and outreach programs to raise awareness about the importance of tree planting, ecosystem restoration, and climate change mitigation.

Through this joint effort, Naturesomalia and Jazeera University are laying the groundwork for a greener, more climate-resilient Somalia—combining scientific expertise, community engagement, and nature-based solutions to create lasting environmental impact.
